Yvette Sim describes in her artist statement, “I am excited about exploring the broad range of possibilities that the painting media provides in capturing light, and my interpretation of it as I respond to the beauty of nature.”
Since Yvette moved to Calgary in 1981, she has worked and volunteered. She began lessons in watercolour painting in 1994 from Michelle Zarb, Susan Woolgar and Loretta Secord. Over the years she has expanded into oils, acrylics, pastels, pen and ink and has taken many workshops from artists as Doug Swinton, Brian Atyeo, Brent Laycock, Robert Wood, Sharon Williams and Neil Patterson. She draws inspiration from travels to other countries, the Canadian rocky mountain landscape, wildlife and her love of flowers, having lived near Fish Creek Park for many years.
Yvette has made art contributions to many causes such as Ducks Unlimited, Inn from the Cold, Alberta Children”s Hospital, Canadian Cancer Society, CNIB and Epilepsy Association of Calgary. She was a participating artist from 1997 to 2012 in the CE&S Western Art Gallery Artists Window until the program closed. She showed and sold at the Foothills Fine Arts Show and Sale in High River for many years.
Yvette still enjoys her involvement with the CCPS and Leighton Art Centre where she shows twice a year in their Clothesline and Christmas in the Country Sales. She also enters the CE&S Arts and Crafts where she has earned many ribbons over the years.
