Ruth Hill
The serenity of a sunset in the mountains, the pristine colors, the ruggedness, the gentleness of first light on the mountains, the spirituality of being surrounded with Nature’s own cathedral pillars – all speak to me and give me the inspiration to interpret the wonder of the mountains and Nature’s landscapes through the mediums of acrylics and oils. I also gain much of my inspiration from the environment surrounding my remote summer home which is a log cabin in the B.C. interior. Canoeing on crystal clear waters with varying light conditions sets the tone for the 'moodiness' that observers comment on when viewing my paintings. It is here that I experience the 'surreal' landscapes where I am one with Nature. I want to experience this again through my paintings.
Ruth was born in New Brunswick where she spent her formative years. After completing her education with a Bachelor of Education degree with a major in Art Education, Ruth taught in New Brunswick and Quebec where she became very involved with Art education and teaching Art. From this period onwards in her profession as an educator, she continued to teach Art until retiring in 1998.
Ruth moved to Alberta in 1965 to teach in Calgary and to spend time in the mountains. Her first impression of the mountains and the foothills has kept her here over the years and is as meaningful to her now to express what she values as it was forty years ago.
Ruth’s love of photography is an asset to her paintings as she remains ever vigilant to those elements that would be a starting point from which to capture the essence of the photo. She take more photos than she will ever have time to paint but each one can be that moment in time to be captured on canvas.
Ruth is a member of the Parkdale Art Club and the Calgary Community Painters Society. She has taken classes at the Wildflower Art Centre and workshops with Karen Richter, Robert Wood, Rick Berg and Brent Laycock.
